  • A Renewal Application Form
  • A Letter outlining the steps to renew
Out of Ontario?

You can renew your licence up to 180 days in advance if you’ll be away when it expires.

Step 2: Book Your Appointment

Once you receive your letter and form, book your renewal appointment at a ServiceOntario location:

Step 3: What to Bring to Your Appointment

When it’s time for your appointment, bring:

  • Your current driver’s licence (or temporary licence)
  • Your renewal application form (if available)
  • Any glasses or contact lenses you use for driving
  • Any glasses used for reading (for the screening task)
  • Hearing aids, if you use them
  • If your licence has expired: Government-issued ID with your name, birthdate, and signature

What Happens at the Appointment?

You will:

  1. Take a vision assessment
  2. Complete a 5-minute screening exercise (more details below)

Depending on your results, you may be asked to:

  • Take a road test
  • Provide a doctor’s report or eye care professional’s vision report
  • Submit additional medical information

If needed, further instructions will be mailed to you.

Step 4: Pay Your Renewal Fee

You’ll pay a $36 renewal fee at Service Ontario.

Your new licence will be sent by mail within 4 to 6 weeks.

About the Vision Test

A vision screener will assess how clearly you see.

Bring:

  • Your regular driving glasses or contacts
  • Your most recent prescription glasses

Already had an eye test?

If you bring a signed report from your optometrist or eye doctor (dated within 6 months), you may not need a vision test at the appointment. The report must include:

  • Visual acuity
  • Peripheral vision measurements

(Some reports may still require review.)

The Screening Exercise: Drawing a Clock

This 5-minute, pen-and-paper task is not computerized, not language-based, and not oral. It simply measures how well you organize and recognize information.

Instructions:

  1. Draw a large circle.
  2. Add numbers to make it look like a clock.
  3. Set the clock hands to show 11:10.
  4. Stop when you’re done. Your form will be collected after 5 minutes.

Need help understanding the instructions?

You can request translated versions of the task instructions during your session.
